Tesla's Autopilot can be classified as level 2 under the SAE International six levels (0 to 5) of vehicle automation. At this level, the car can act autonomously, but requires the driver to monitor the driving at all times and be prepared to take control at a moment's notice. Autopilot is suitable only on limited-access highways, and sometimes will fail to detect lane markings and disengage itself. This system also does not detect pedestrians or cyclists, and while Autopilot detects motorcycles, there have been two instances of HW1 cars rear-ending motorcycles.
