ATI Radeon X1800 Preview @ TrustedReviews

"The test results were pretty interesting. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to run Half-Life 2 on the X1800 XT, since Valve decided to update the code and break all of the demos that everyone uses for benchmarking. However Far Cry threw up some interesting numbers. As expected the X1800 XT was CPU locked at the lower resolutions, much like the 7800 GTX. However, the 7800 GTX was CPU locked at about 20fps above the X1800 XT. The 7800 GTX remained in the lead up to the point where the CPU ceased to be the limiting factor - then the X1800 XT edged ahead. I quizzed ATI about this and was told that the X1800 XT does have a more significant CPU overhead than the 7800 GTX, but it scales better once the CPU is out of the equation."

R520: Radeon X1800 Architecture Preview @ Beyond3D

"The memory controller consists of the central controller, or arbiter, with the memory clients surrounding it that can make their data requests to the arbiter. All around the edges of the chip are two 256-bit ring busses, running at same speeds as the DRAM's, which run in opposite directions to reduce latency (dependant on where the data is going to or from it should only have to traverse a maximum of half the ring); by placing the memory bus around the edges of the chip wire density around the controller is decreased, which can result in higher clock speeds."

"Mobile computing just got a little more interesting. Techware Labs just received a Spartan Laptop with an AMD Athlon(tm) 64 bit processor 2800+ to benchmark. We just couldn't wait to see what this system could do. The laptop came with 512 MB of RAM and the ATI's 9700 Mobility Radeon. Just with these few specs provided, we couldn't get Half Life 2 loaded fast enough, but we will get to that a little later in this review. This laptop is an average size and weight laptop which is a good thing for those of us who are carrying the laptop at the airport from concourse to concourse. With its built in network capability over an ethernet or the 802.11g wifi connection, you will be able to connect to wireless hotspots or a hotel's network."

"Allan: How is Nvidia managing to fairly consistently beat ATI in getting product to retail channels, you guys don?t seem to falling foul of "paper launches"?
Adam: I think we as a company have changed the way in which we bring a product to market. The day we launched the 7800 GTX and the GT, it was possible to buy it online in volume from all the major Etail stores (nearly 40), with boards available from all our partners. We believe this was something the community deserved after the toleration of all the previous paper launches in the past. I think it is all about execution, and with the team we have at NVIDIA, we have managed have full availability on launch day. It will be interesting to see if our competitors can meet the same high standards."
